MUSIC ON THE MASSIVE: IDK – ‘IWASVERYBAD’
Given the general ‘newness’ of D.C. Hip-Hop in relation to the country, it’s amazing to see the renaissance movement of styles and creativity that’s happening in the city. While mainstays like Wale and Shy Glizzy continue to make moves at the top, the likes of Yung Gleesh, Goldlink and Logic continue to feed their dedicated fanbases. Newer frontrunners like Chaz French and Rico Nasty are making their way to long-term success. Even Fat Trel is back on the streets, readying his next wave of tunes for the masses.
In the midst of all this, IDK (formerly Jay IDK) has been carrying the DMV torch in his own right, creating underground classics like SubTrap and The Empty Bank (both considered critically-acclaimed by most). Now, the Maryland native is ready to supply his newest project titled IWASVERYBAD, created in conjunction with Adult Swim.
Led by the single/visual for “Baby Scale” (featuring Gleesh), IWASVERYBAD looks to continue IDK’s ability to make vivid the lives of suburban kids (including himself) drawn to the streets, as well as the many vices that come from that upbringing. Thanks to Adult Swim, fans are able to check out the first three tracks from the forthcoming release, one of which features Swizz Beatz (“Maryland Ass N***a”)…the other is a posse cut that sees IDK alongside Gleesh, DOOM (!) and Del The Funky Homosapien (“Pizza Shop”). Check out some of IDK’s lyrics from the former of the two:
Stick a middle-class kid in a bad school and that’s me
The bad apple that dangled up on the fam’s tree
Ballin’ to be like 2K, no Raz B
My fruit been forbidden, you n***as ain’t gotta ask Eve
The first one in my family to see the penitentiary
When I shoulda been seein’ C’s, B’s, A’s…
Check out those tracks below (or head here). IWASVERYBAD — which also sees appearances from Chief Keef and Mother Marygold — will officially drop on October 13th; you can pre-order the album via iTunes.
