Buku Music + Art Project Festival Images (And A Model For Future For DC Festivals) Thu, 16 Mar 2017 15:48:57 +0000

David Everett

While many of us were dealing with an unbearable cold front this past weekend, thousands of festival go-ers were partying down in New Orleans for the 6th Annual Buku Music + Art Project. Located right in the heart of New Orlean’s Lower Garden District, the festival is a boutique event that combines the vibes of an underground house-party with the impact of a big festival. The intimate industrial location is the perfect fit for the sonic vibes of a festival lineup that always fuses EDM, hip-hop and indie rock seamlessly together. From the famous BUKU Graffiti Wall to the classic local food to the pop-up street performers and art exhibits brought on-site, the festival blends New Orleans traditions with the progressive attitude of the creative, youthful culture that is fueling the new New Orleans. And in BUKU festival, one can see the possibilities of a fusion between mainstream, “national” art, and the local art and music of different places and cities.

It’s one thing to build stages and invite huge artistic names to a city for an awesome music festival. And make no mistake – these festivals are incredible and fun. But when a festival such as BUKU embeds itself in the local culture and uses these huge artistic names to elevate local art and music, it makes a festival have so much more life and character. Not only does this make the festival experience feel intimate and different, but it simultaneously broadcasts local culture to the rest of the nation. It is no stretch to imagine a festival of this nature taking flight in DC in the future. Between the musical talent (have you checked out our Collective?) and the graffiti artists and the painters and the poets there’s enough here that can and should be shared with the world. How cool would it be for a national arts and music festival to take place here in the nation’s capital and show the rest of the nation how much more this city is than politics and government. But make no mistake: there will only be one BUKU. The festival presents an to intriguing model to follow, but never copy. So mark your calendars for next year – the 7th edition of the BUKU Project is sure to be just as amazing.

The following artists are featured: Deadmau5, Tyco, Juvenile, Sleigh Bells, Roar!, Amine, Vince Staples, Lil Yachty, 21 Savage, Kaiydo, Carseat Headrest, Thundercat, $uicideBoy$, Big Wild, Ambre, Rezz, Alina Baraz and lido.

Footwerk gets you in your feels with “ChillSwitch” Tue, 14 Mar 2017 19:39:20 +0000 Chadwick Alexander

Footwerk gets you in your feels with “Chillswitch”. Lead Vocalist Melissa ‘Mel’ Moffett’s powerful yet angelic voice almost brought me to tears as well as giving me endless chills when I saw them perform this live at last year’s D.C. Funk Parade. If you have ever felt love then you’d probably have the same reaction as mine. The Video was shot in the Nation’s Capital around and about the U street corridor and Shaw neighborhood gives a smooth mellow tone with a speakeasy vibe, with cameos from other DMV creatives such as Demont “Peekaso” Pinder and JusPaul Spires. Footwerk plans to go on a nationwide tour called ‘One Night Stands’ this year so be on the lookout for them in a city near you!!!

RDGLDGRN gets political with “Opera” Feat. Method Man Mon, 13 Mar 2017 12:42:08 +0000 Niq Bohr

DMV Natives RDGLDGRN brought out all the stops this time with “Opera” a politically influenced track feat. One of the greatest rappers of all time; Method Man. As Meth spits “Middle finger to 5-0” which is definitely a statement I can get behind, it seems as if their past Dave Grohl companionship still lingers in their music today. What also lingers is the fact that “I take a win every day I breathe” mentality in the lyrics of the first verse. The recent and overall police brutality, though not “trending” at this very moment, is still a sore subject for our country as well as the struggles of minorities and immigrants currently under the new Trump administration. RDGLDGRN’s member all from different ethnic minority backgrounds that derive directly from immigration to America take all of these issues to heart and are standing up for equality and resisting oppression thru their music, and influencing their fans to do so as well.

Dorothy Raises Hell at The Rock & Roll Hotel Sun, 12 Mar 2017 14:52:27 +0000 Kate Toth

I stumbled upon Dorothy during a late night insomnia fueled YouTube run.  One of my favorite bands to stalk on YouTube is Halestorm and YouTube surprisingly recommended “Raise Hell” by Dorothy and I was instantly hooked. Dorothy Martin’s voice beamed in my ears as I maxed the volume in my basement. I jumped on google to find out if  they had been on tour with Halestorm because they seemed like a great pairing for a show, but guess who was coming to the infamous Rock and Roll Hotel on March 6th to share their sound with DC? FUCKING DOROTHY!! It was raining the night of the show so of course, I threw on a flannel, some red lipstick, and packed up the camera bag to go shoot the band in action. Not only was I already impressed that Dorothy is signed with Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation,  they put on a ‘rip your heart out’ set! Songs like, “Medicine Man”, “Woman”, and “Shelter” to show their raw, sultry sound. They gave me goosebumps the entire time they were onstage AND couldn’t help but leave feeling confidently inspired by Dorothy Martin’s GIVE NO FUCKS and TAKES NO SHIT persona she definitely has gained a lifetime fan in me.

Get Fed Episode 9 Triple Double Case of “Why” Thu, 09 Mar 2017 05:50:56 +0000

This is episode 9 of #GetFed: your go to resource for food porn and nonsense hosted by Marcus Bradley Donovan (The Pasteurized Chef) and DJ/producer/fast food addict zacheser.

Produced by One Love Massive Studios.

1. Krispy Kreme has announced a box of Power Rangers inspired donuts in anticipation of the upcoming film from Lionsgate and Saban Films. The donuts, which will be cream filled, will feature the various 5 colors famously donned by the superheroes and will be adorned with their signature lightning bolt from the logo. They will be available for a limited time and can be found in select Krispy Kreme stores.

2. In-N-Out has announced that their next pop up location will be in Shanghai. The burger chain, known for its cult like status and for being a West Coast mainstay, has been doing pop-ups intermittently to bring their signature burgers to the mouths of cities all over the world as a means of spreading their animal style love. It’s rumored that the March 22 pop up will only have around 200 burgers.

3. Weeks after being declared the top nuggets in the country, Wendy’s has low key pulled their spicy nuggets off the menu of the majority of locations in the continental U.S. At this time, there seems to be no plans to reintroduce them at a national scale, but fans are hopeful.

4. Coors Brewing Company has revealed their plans to bring Zima back for a limited time. Originally touted as “zomething different,” this follows the wave of other 90’s beverage resurgences such as Hi-C Ecto Cooler and Surge.

5. Food Network is bringing back Iron Chef America. The reboot, titled Iron Chef Gauntlet, will be a 6 episode series with Alton Brown returning as host alongside chefs Bobby Flay, Masaharu Morimoto, and Michael Symon. It premieres on April 16.

With Arby’s Meat Mountain adding a fish filet to the already ridiculous monstrosity and Little Caesars new Smokehouse Pizza, it’s clear hybrid foods are on trend. For this week’s pantry, we are gonna list our three favorite hybrid food items: things that shouldn’t work together, but do work together.

We are trying out the Spicy Triple Double Crunchwrap from Taco Bell: a menu item designed with the sole purpose to make you colon quiver in fear.
